When to Use This Calculator

Use this calculator after each harvest to track your grow performance over time. Biological efficiency (BE) is the standard metric for comparing productivity across different species, substrates, and genetics. By measuring BE consistently, you can identify which variables are improving or hurting your yields — making it invaluable for both hobby growers optimizing their technique and commercial operations evaluating genetics and substrate recipes.

Tips for Best Results

  • Track every flush separately and record the weight immediately. Most blocks produce 2-3 flushes, and your total BE is the sum of all flushes divided by the dry substrate weight.
  • Always weigh fresh mushrooms immediately after harvest, before they begin losing moisture. Even a few hours on the counter can reduce apparent weight by 5-10%, skewing your BE calculation.
  • A biological efficiency over 100% is considered excellent and means you harvested more fresh mushroom weight than the dry substrate weight you started with. This is common with oyster mushrooms on optimized substrates.
  • After a certain point, genetics matter more than substrate. If your BE plateaus despite substrate improvements, consider sourcing new cultures or isolating stronger performers on agar.
  • Consistent environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, fresh air exchange) beat trying to achieve “perfect” conditions. Stability across the entire fruiting cycle produces better yields than brief spikes of ideal parameters.
